What is Developmental Editing?

Wow – September already! Summer days flew by, with time to enjoy long daylight hours, visitors, adventure outings, meditation, and some time for writing. Starting mid-July, I made a commitment to spend at least 15 minutes with my personal writing, Monday – Friday. This is a shift for me, since I usually take a complete summer break.

Right now, I feel like I’m in the middle of a transformation, choosing new priorities and setting others aside. I have been working with a writing buddy, someone else who made a similar commitment, and the two of us report to each other every couple of days. A new level of accountability has emerged, and I am making some important breakthroughs. Perhaps the biggest shift is staying curious and present with my reluctance to return to my emerging manuscript; part of my Buddhist practice of staying present to what is uncomfortable. So rather than look quickly for distractions – of which there are many – I’ve been staying present to the words in front of me, for a minimum of 15 minutes each day. Each 15-minute time block builds a stronger foundation, supporting me to the completion of my collection of essays.

I’ve also decided to devote more time to the developmental editing work that I love. To that end, I’ve created a new page on my website, letting you know what developmental editing means, and how I collaboratively work with each writer to arrive at second draft revisions. I’ve copied some highlights to give you an idea of what I offer, beginning with my definition.

What is Developmental Editing?

Developmental editing means working with an editor to revise your rough-draft writing to a more polished second draft. As an editor, I focus on reflecting the strengths in your writing, as well as providing suggestions for improvement. It’s important to me to help build your confidence as a writer, teach subtleties about crafting strong writing, invite you to refine your intended audience, and connect with the deeper WHY fueling your writing.

When Should I Hire a Developmental Editor?

Perhaps you have a piece of writing that you have revised and reworked as much as you can with the support of your trusted allies. However, you are aware that there is still something more waiting to evolve in your creative piece, and you are seeking a fresh set of professional eyes on your writing to help make it the best it can be.

If this sounds like you, consider Developmental Editing as your next step. Here’s what one recent client has to say about working with me.

“Marie really gets my writing. She combines a high level of organization and much-needed structure with encouragement, enthusiasm, and skillful feedback, all of which keep me committed to my writing. As with any editor, we may sometimes disagree on a suggested change, but I appreciate that she never pushes her opinions, respecting my autonomy as the author. It’s wonderful to work with her.”
