What Are Creative Focus Sessions?

Welcome! Many of you reading this post are new to Adventures in Writing. I’m so excited to see many new faces join our writing community and I wanted to take this opportunity to tell you about my monthly Free Online Writing Group – Creative Focus Sessions!

These FREE one-hour timed sessions are designed for each person to work on their own individual projects. The idea is to set aside the time in your calendar and work within a group setting; creating a sense of accountability and focus for delving into a project (whatever that may be).

Why Join a Free Online Writing Group?

The combined energy in the company of others’ support provides creative flow. Knowing that others are working alongside me helps me stay on task until completion.

There’s a level of accountability in joining a free online writing group, even when we’re not interacting. Bask in this time of silent, energetic support for your creative intentions. Take time to reflect on your priorities, and then dive in!

How are Creative Focus Sessions Structured?

Creative Focus Sessions are held over Zoom. We begin with a brief introduction stating our geographic location, and a project we intend to work on.

During the working period, video and sound are turned off until the last 5 minutes, at which time participants come back together to share wins and what’s been accomplished. Coming together at the end allows a moment of reflection before moving into the next part of your day.

What to Expect and How to Prepare?

Come prepared to work independently on your project – whatever that might be. If you want some writing prompts, those are provided for you in the Zoom chat. These sessions are self-directed times in the company of others, as you might have experienced in a university library, with everyone working on mid-term papers simultaneously, yet independently.

Here are some of the ways people have spent their hour:

  • Writing from prompts
  • Chapter revisions on a manuscript
  • Preparing documents for tax filing
  • Organizing files and decluttering
  • Cooking a meal
  • Resting
  • Responding to emails
  • Creating a to-do list for the week
  • Business tasks

What We Don’t Do…

We don’t share our writing during Creative Focus Sessions. This FREE online writing group is a tool for those in my writing community to experience working in a group setting.

If you are looking for more focused writing support, and have never been part of one of my writing programs, I recommend signing up for my next Step into Your Story series, which is scheduled for April-May 2023.

How Do I Join?

Every session happens in a Zoom meeting room. We share that link with everyone on the mailing list, as well as in Marie’s Writing Oasis. You do not need to be a member of the Facebook Oasis to join these sessions.

Email maccagno.marie@gmail.com or Join the Oasis to catch the next one.

Creative Focus Sessions are a date with your creativity. As you build a dedicated practice, use these sessions as part of your commitment to show up for yourself.

Creatively Yours,

How to Ask For & Receive Helpful, Supportive Feedback on Your Writing

Not all writing reviewers are created equal! When you hand your carefully crafted pages to someone to provide feedback, the result is often unhelpful & at worst, can be crushing. This FREE guide will help you choose insightful, supportive readers. It will also teach you how to ask for what you need and want from them to continue honing your writing with confidence.
